Day 6: Church and R&R – May 16th, 2010

This morning we woke up later and got ready for church. We went to the church that the FCF is a branch off of. Great service. Time spoke on Genesis and creation. He spoke mainly about how we are created in his image – Imago Dei. It’s lovely. He spoke about how a lot of people hold all creation at the same level as humans, that the animals in the rainforest are just as important as us humans, and Tim rebuked that and said it was not true. The Lord God has made us in His image! The Lord’s image is not equal to the cows and mountain lions. His image is special and beautiful and only placed in us. He said that we are the inheritants of the earth, and so we should be good stewards, but we cannot deny that because the Lord has given us certain characteristics that are from and of his image we cannot ignore that we are different and special. It was a great sermon indeed.
After church we went to central mall for lunch and window shopped. All (nearly/all that I have seen) the food courts in Thailand require you to buy coupons and then use them to buy the food. After you get the food, you can return left over coupons for Baht. Because it is so fantastic, I decided to have chicken fried rice again. It was delicious, as always :o) When we finished eating we went around and window shopped. In the process, Crissy and I stumbled upon some amazing massage chairs. They were free and gave fantastic full body massages. We decided to stay for the fifteen minute cycle and we had a chance to talk. It was a great bonding afternoon for us. We walked (and got lost) in the rest of the mall. Vogue Avenue was uber fun. There was a strip of stores that had boutique esk clothes. Crissy and I decided to try on a couple of outfits. They were a little expensive… around $30 usd, so we didn’t buy them but took pictures and enjoyed the experience. After we left the mall, we came back to Thong house and were planning on going to the Sunday night market but TADA! It rained – for a long while. It was the first time it’s rained thus far so Trayce and I went and got drenched dancing in it. Because the rain continued, Nate decided it would be best if we stayed in. In Thailand, McDonald’s delivers! So we ordered in. It took Nate like 40 minutes to order and then another hour after that for the delivery to get here. Haha But when it did, it was quite the experience. We had a killer awesome bonding time – watching silly YouTube videos, and Linda braiding my, Eli, and Shannon’s hair. We just had a great time with each other. Kels, Jess, Stacey, and I did 8 minute abs – what a work out! Phew! It was indeed a great Sabbath! :o)

Day 5: Kham Sri and Gam Phaeng Ngam - May 15th, 2010

Oh my gosh! I know now why the Lord has sent me here – their names are Kham Sri and Gam Phaeng Ngam. Day 5, which no one considers to be day 5 but me, was amazing. We woke up and ate breakfast. I forgot to write! When I took a shower a couple days ago, there was a gecko chillin in my towel, so when I took it and put it on, it fell out – I was traumatized and screaming! It was so sketch! Back to day 5, we all got into the songthaew and went to Kham Sri. There we met Stefan and Tina Michel. Stefan is German and Tina is Chinese/Mongolian. They have one biological son named Tobius – amazing kid. His dad only speaks German to him and his mom only speaks English to him so he speaks English, German, and Thai (which he learns from his friends and everyone around him in society). Trilingual at age 7…crazy. We had an amazing time at Kham Sri (Meaning Word of Glory). Their philosophy on ministry is to love kids. They’ve observed that a number (huge) of kids are neglected by their parents and never are hugged or touched. So we went to go play and help! It was great! I met the sweetest girl. Her name is Nat. She is 9 but looks about 5. All the Thai kids are so small! She loved taking pictures with everyone’s camera, which is great – everyone needs a hobby. We decided to have a water fight since Tina had water balloons. We decided to tell the David and Goliath story and simulate the stones as being the water balloons. It was a hit. I was absolutely soaked before I had to teach the lesson, but it’s all good because it dried off while we ate an amazing mean. It was rice and a carrot/peanut sauce. I loved it. It wasn’t uber spicy or anything. Just delicious. After we left Kham Sri, we went to the FCF and debriefed with Nate and then Brennen came and told us about his new ministry proposal. He wants to make a skate park/music venue where youth can come and ministries can use that for getting a hold of kids. It’s a great idea. It would cost about $300,000 usd and a bunch of prayer and support from the Thai government. It would open in the next two years and would be a.mazing. I think it’s exactly what Chiang Mai needs. A venue for ministry to be made from community and relationships. After the FCF, we went to Gam Phaeng Ngam, which are basically the slums. It’s so sad to see that there are people living like that when I live in a nice house. I have a shower, I have a bed, and I have a living room that roosters are not constantly roaming in. I am so grateful for what I do have; I thank God for the abundance of blessings that I have experienced. At Gam Phaeng Ngam (which means Pretty Dirt Wall) we did a craft with the little kids. There was the sweetest little girls named Jeeb Joy and she attached to me. Oh my gosh these little girls are pulling on my heart strings. With the older kids (ages 13-16) we played a game that Somcahi (director of Gam Phaeng Ngam ministry) made up. Basically the object of the game is to capture or be captured. There are two teams of equal size and you send one person over at a time. You have to say deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and hold that or else you have to go to jail. You try to tag the other team members without being captured and put into jail. Such a fun game! We left there and went to the night Bizarre. Another amazing experience. There were so many vendors. Everywhere you turned, someone was trying to sell you something. I ended up buying 5 movies (for 500B), a pair of pants (140B), and a dress (200B). Super cute. We ate dinner in a food court – yum. Chicken fried rice is definitely delicious. With it they gave me chicken broth soup. Also delish. I think I found a favorite non-spicy dish. :o) Yum
So Day 5 was marked with great food and great ministry. I am uber excited to see what the rest of the time here has for me and my team.

Day 4: Wat and Street Market – May 14th, 2010

Good Morning! Sawadee Ka! Last night we went to sleep at 9 pm and this morning we woke up at 6 am. There is a rooster that lives across the street but I did not hear him early this morning, even though some of my teammates did. Nate came and knocked at 6am. We got ready: took a shower, brushed our teeth, got dressed, and then had Thai cereal. Yum! And Kiwi juice, yummier! We then had until 8:30 for journaling and Jesus time. Right now, I am going to read some of Andrew Murray’s _With Christ In The School of Prayer_ and also Ecclesiastes 5:1-7. …
Day four was fantastic! We went to the Wat (Wat Doi Suthep). Talk about a beautiful heartbreak! The temples were such gorgeous architecture – gold leaf covered doams and idols… it is completely beautiful. But what gets me is the countless reminders of Old Testament sin – idolatry. I just want to sit and cry for the people who think their pointless merit earning and attempts to gain better karma will gain them something. I know that it will not and I want them to know the truth. We have a heavenly father who is not abusive and cruel like the fathers here on earth who send their children into slavery, and a father Gof who is not fickle like the idols they buy flowers and incense to appease. Our God is Abba – daddy. Loving and Caring. We were worth the sacrifice of his only son! We could never do anything to deserve the love we’ve been given! Pouring water on a flame will not give us any greater sight in his eyes that what we have now. He loves all of his children for who they are and is calling out for a relationship. I think that going and observing this is/will be one of the most devastating things I will ever witness. After we went to the Wat, we went to a restaurant and ate lunch. We all had (for the exception of Stacey’s iced coffee and Trayce’s passion fruit juice) Thai iced tea. I love it! I think it tastes like chocolate, coffee, and strawberry milk all mixed up. I love it. We all ate Khao Soi, which is a red curry soup with noodles and chicken. The chicken was on the bone still so I am very proud that I ate it. I used a spoon to scrape off the meat (avoiding the skin). It was pretty spicy, but Nate told us it was a 1.5 on a scale of 1-10! Wowzers!
After lunch we went to the street market. What an experience! It’s like a bazziollion stores that are legit Thai-aimed for Thai people and not so much for tourists. There was a building which I refer to as the mall that had 3 levels of stores. I bought some key chains for my girls and also a pair of fisherman/gaucho pants. Love them. After that we went back to Thong house, shower for the second time and got ready to go to dinner at Tim’s house (Kara’s parents). We ate some amazing noodles and peanut sauce – yummy. We also ate fired Morning Glories. Who knew a flower could be so delish! After we ate we played uno, phase 10, and Sorry to practice our numbers. JD, Eli, Crissy, and I played Sorry and the boys team won – lame! After that we came home and got ready to shower. I was so tired that I passed out while I was waiting for my turn! Ha Great great day!

Day 2/3: Travel/Arrival - May 12th/13th, 2010

Oh my gosh! That was the longest plane ride ever! Fourteen hours! Gesh! Online it says that the “economy class” (formally known as coach) chairs recline deeply – lies! By this they mean here, lean at a 93 degree angle. It was super hard to sleep! I took a melatonin and passed out before we took off, but I woke up every hour for the 5 or 6 that I slept. I woke up and because China Air is super cool, they give each customer their own TV with a choice of movies, music, and games. Among the movies was “The Book of Eli”, “Avatar”, “The Leap Year”, “When in Rome”, “Shutter Island”, and more. I watched “When in Rome” super cute and super cheesy movie. I stayed awake throughout the while, too. Later on, I tried watching “The Leap Year” but fell asleep and “Avatar” with the same consequence. Obviously they were not attention grabbing enough (or I could just be uber exhausted!) The food = nasty. I slept through dinner, which apparently was good, and Jess thinks that there was another meal that we all slept through, so the meal I had was breakfast (served at 4am local time – 2pm Colorado time). It consisted of eggs, sausage, and soggy hash browns. I do not eat eggs or pork so I ate the soggy hash browns and fruit cup. There was a tea which I did not like, so I had orange juice. Eli really like the tea, so he drank mine. I sat by Eli and JD on this flight. I had the window seat! Bomb this meant that I had something to lean up against and sleep :o) Bomb! I do not have the window seat again – bummer, but I’m hoping that by the time we come back, the team and I will be close enough that it won’t be awkward for me to sleep on their laps :o) ha
On the layover in Taipei, Taiwan, Eli, Kelsey, Jess, and I played Phase 10 – Best game ever! I lost the blue flower on my watch so I abandoned the game to go look for it, without luck – wah wah wah… maybe it fell into my bag or something (crossing my fingers)
Sigh – right now, we are on the flight from Taipei to Chiang Mai! Woot Woot! I am sitting in between Trayce and Eli. Trayce and I are going to teach Eli how to make bracelets on this flight (3 and half hour flight). We are scheduled to land around 12:30pm Thai time (11:30pm – yesterday – US time). The time differences are starting to confuse me.
Thus far, I feel as if I am doing a good job to accomplish my goals! :o) Granted, we haven’t made it to Thailand yet, but it is a process and journey. If I work hard to achieve goals early on, I think that later on they will be easier to grasp. They are now handing out food! Yum airplane food – looks like chicken! I’ll let you know how it is: Not yummy… haha

Well we are here!!! In THAILAND! Whoooo!!! We arrived about a half hour early which was cool. It took us a bit to get our luggage and we got stopped at customs because of the vitamins we brought for the orphans, but alas we were let through. Nate met us at the airport and we took two song taos to the Thong house. Wow! Much better than we were expecting – it is Gorgeous! Only a few spiders so far – one at the baggage claim at the airport – HUGE! I kid you not, the size of my closed fist. I am on a mat on the floor to sleep and I am not excited for the creepy crawlies that are gonna wanna snuggle with me tonight! Nooooo thanks! Lizzards are great because they eat the bugs but stay away from us. I sincerely hope some excited lizards come hungry!
I just showered – without hot water but it was still warm! Crap! We have A/C but it just isn’t working fast enough. Haha
Tonight/Today we did some culture/FCF training. Nate got us lunch from the market. I are fried rice and fried chick – yum! After her told us some basic history items of the Thai culture and about the places we’ll be working at. It’s so interesting and devastating at the same time. After that, we went to Big C which is like a Thai Walmart! They had everything we needed. I needed shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, and I had to find it there. We went to exchange currency and I learned that you get a better exchange rate with 50’s and 100’s than with 20’s but in a matter of a Baht. The exchange is 31/32 ish Baht per USD. After exchanging we went upstairs and looked for our needed items. I found Herbal Essences (in Thai) for 79 Baht for Shampoo and 79 for conditioner and then I got some Floré body wash stuff for like 40 Baht. Get this! In the Thai culture, the people would rather be really light skinned, whereas in the US, everyone wants to be dark tanned. In Thailand, it’s a sign of status. It says that you are not a laborer by profession (if you are light skinned). Nate told us that the Thai people and culture is very racist and biasted. They judge people based on their appearance, their background, everything. Nate said that since black people are so discriminated against, there are not many in the whole country! It is so sad. He also told us that the boys (Eli and JD) will probably be seen as sex tourists because they are white men, not dressed uberly professionally. It disgusts me how that is even a stereotype because of how many people come to Thailand to use and sexually abuse women and children.
The theme for the trip is “Talk is Cheap” which is something I really have to work on: being quick to listen and slow to speak. We get this theme from Ecclesiastes 5:1-7. It talks about how in the throne of God, we have to remember that we are human. We need not say a bunch of words because God is supreme, he doesn’t ask for us to talk. It says that when you promise God something, follow through, don’t present empty words. This makes me fall back on the idea that faith without action is dead and that action without prayer is pointless. We should never go on our own accord, but instead come to the doors of heaven with open ears. God’s will will be shown if we allow him to show us. We must be aligning our hearts with his.
For dinner, we went to the market. We were given 50 Baht which is like a buck sixty. I bought sticky rice and a watermelon juice. Yummmmy. The rice was 10B and the juice was 20B. After we picked up dinner, we went back to Thong House and ate and discussed Buddhism. It is so crazy how Thai Buddhism is. It’s like animism, Hinduism, and Buddhism all together. They take a bunch of beliefs and mash them all together to form an uptimal way to get into some sort of self pleasing place. It is way confusing! Sigh. Christianity is easily accepted to add to their other beliefs, but they don’t practice following only Jesus. He said that he is THE Way, THE Truth, and THE Life, no one come to the Father except through him. It’s all about Jesus. He is jealous for our hearts and doesn’t want to share… which is the way it should be. It’s just so hard to know that less that .5% follow Christ in Thailand.
After dinner we showered and then went to Nate’s house to learn Thai sounds and numbers. There is so much confusion, but I am trying my best!
Here are the numbers:
0 – sun (soon)
1 – neung (newng)
2 – song (song--)
3 – sam (sam--)
4 – see (see)
5 – ha (/ha\)
6 – hok (halk)
7 – jet (chet)
8 – bpe:t (bet)
9 – gao (gow)
10 – sip (sip)
11 – sip e:t (sip et)
20 – yee sip
21 – yee sip e:t
25 – yee sip ha
30 – sam sip
31 – sam sip e:t
36 sam sip ho:k
40 – sam sip ho:k
49 – see sip gao
50 – ha sip
60 – ho:k sip
70 – jet sip
100 – neung roi
I am going to learn some more today and I will fill you in late with how that goes!

Day 1: Travel - May 11th, 2010

Wow! The countdown and wait is over! We are on our way to Thailand and on our way to do the work the Lord has put ahead of us! Currently, I am on a plane (flight 815) to LAX… I have a sleepy eyed Crissy I on my left and an entranced Eli on my right (he is watching some sort of Discovery Channel show on the TV). We were very lucky to have all our seats booked right next to eachother (last year they weren’t so lucky). We have been blessed many times over already this trip. My teammates: Crissy, Eli, JD, Jess, Trayce, Shannon, Linda, Kelsey, and Stacey, are soo amazing! I know that God has placed each member on this team for a reason. I know that each member will bring unique qualities, talents, and gifts to every task that is placed before us. This is going to be fantastic! Packing the last couple days has been an adventure on it’s own. I initially packed all of my clothes in cheap ziplock baggies – but the vacuuming-out-air concept was not so successful because they were in cheap bags and kept re-inflating, so that did not work as fabulously as I had planned. What I ended up doing was rolling up all of my clothes and rubberbanding them. I am so proud of how much I fit in the size suitcase that I used. I managed: 5 tshirts, 7 skirts, 2 polos, a pair of long khakis, 4 pairs of shorts, a couple of tanktops, 5 camis, a bunch of panties and socks, and a few other things. It turbulence is coming with the “10 minutes until decent” announcement… more later!
Okay! We are in LA! Yay! There is another group waiting to go to Thailand to do mission work. God bless them! They will be in Northern Thai villages, as well. :o) Fantastic. We have had one casualty thus far – the peanut butter was confiscated by customs! Bummer! Shannon and Stacey were not happy campers. Sad day! But thank God! The redvines were allowed through (PTL) My team is exhausted and we are ready to crash just as soon as we get on the plane to go to Taipei. I get a window seat – YAY! So that means I can lean up against it. We are wishing we were much wealthier because then we could fly first class and have the seats that convert into beds! But alsas, this trip is for servants to glorify the one and only king!
I feel as if I should establish some goals for the next couple days.
GOALS
1)Continue to bond with team members
2)Be energetic and positive even when I feel like I need to crash
3)Be super polite and respectful to everyone around me
4)Work hard to learn and remember basic Thai
5)Remember why I am here: Isaiah 61:1-3… The Lord has anointed me
Until tomorrow… :o)

เกือบจะ (Ca keụ̄xb - Almost)

It is Thursday, May 6th. We leave on the 11th! Wow! Time has gone by quickly. I am sorry I have not posted in a lonnnggg time, but nothing very significant has happened. I have raised my money and my team is so siked to be going very soon! If you are not a fan already, please become one on our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Team-Thailand-2010-CCU2theWorld/403947229497?ref=ts
:o)
Right now, I am working on a journal for the trip. I made Ashley Oliver (a fellow CCU short-term missionary) a journal for her Uganda trip. They leave on the 10th and get back the 27th, please keep her and her team in your prayers as well.
I have to pack today! (and clean) The notion that everything will (and must) fit in one suitcase and backpack, is baffling to a compulsive overpacker (which is what I am). I am trying to convince myself that I do not need that shirt and those shoes, etc. 25 days though! A lot of things COULD be needed within that time span, I mean it's almost a month! Lanta.
Okay. I must start to accomplish this feat of impossibility!
